Our Renovation Process Explained

This article provides an outline of what to expect when working on a renovation or remodelling project for your home or business with Island Efficient Homes.

Ensuring we’re a good fit

First-things-first: reach out to schedule an estimate. We’ll take some time to discuss your project and gain an understanding of your goals and requirements. If necessary, we'll also schedule a separate design consultation.

Once we’ve determined that we’ll be a good fit for renovation or remodelling project, we’ll get started on the 4-phase process outlined below.

Note: Island Efficient Homes is based in Nanaimo, BC, and serves the surrounding central Vancouver Island communities and islands.

Phase 1

Preparing an estimate

After we’ve determined the requirements of your project and taken some preliminary measurements and photographs, we’ll present you with a formal estimate.

We’ll explain the estimate in detail to ensure you understand how we have arrived at the quoted price, and explain how our estimate is designed to meet your expectations.

Sometimes there’s a period of initial sticker shock when you receive your estimate, especially for first-time renovators. If necessary, we’re happy to suggest ways to reduce costs, complete work in phases, or change plans to meet a specific deadline without compromising quality.

Phase 2

Designs & permits

When you have approved your estimate, we will request a deposit to secure your commitment and then move forward with the plan design and permit acquisition phase.

If necessary for your project, we will also begin the process of applying for permit(s). While waiting for the permit process to finish, we’ll take the opportunity to order any materials that have long production times to help keep our schedule on track.

Making required revisions

Before your permit is approved, the City of Nanaimo or your local municipality may request certain changes to the initial plans. If required, we may need to revise your project plan (and estimate) to account for these changes.

Phase 3

Scheduling & starting

With design plans and building permits in place, the construction phase of your project can begin.

We will review our renovation schedule with you, and set milestones and expectations. If necessary, we will also recruit and schedule any required specialized subcontractors for your project.

During the term of your project we will be in regular communication so you're kept up to date on how your remodelling or renovation project is progressing.

Phase 4

Project wrap-up

Before we sign off on your renovation project we’ll take you on a thorough tour of the finished work to ensure you’re happy with the result.

Once the project is officially completed, we may ask for your permission to post photos of the finished work on our website or social media pages, and ask you to write us an online review. This is completely optional, of course, but these courtesies go a long way to letting other Nanaimo and area residents find Island Efficient Homes.

We’ll still be there for you to answer any post-project questions or requests. And of course we’ll be ready to schedule your next renovation or construction project when you are!
